Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a type of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy created by Marsha Linehan to help those suffering from mental health. It was primarily developed to help treat Borderline Personality Disorder but research has shown that this treatment approach is effective in treating an array of mental health disorders including anxiety and depression. This treatment modality focuses on increasing our awareness to improve confidence in self to tolerate emotional disturbances. The four main domains targeted by DBT include Mindfulness Training, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotional Regulation. Mindfulness training can help increase our sense of control and understanding of what we are experiencing in this present moment. Interpersonal Effectiveness skills focus on what we can do to be more effective in our relationships such as improving our communication in social settings to help us obtain our wants and needs in more effective ways. Distress Tolerance provides us with skills we can utilize to tolerate extreme emotional distress without making the situation worse on ourselves in the long and short term. Emotional Regulation skills educates us on what emotions are, their purpose, and how we can improve our ability to manage our emotions in healthy ways.
Theraplay is a child and family therapy that has as its goal enhancing and building attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and engagement. Theraplay can be beneficial to children who are suffering from behavioral issues, emotional distress, autism, and attachment struggles. Theraplay can be used with children and adults who have struggled with this issues.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
TF-CBT is a structured form of therapy used to assist with a specific trauma. This form of therapy can be used with children and adults, and is especially beneficial in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder when there is an identified triggering trauma.
